Gyirong
Gyirong The village of Gyirong is located just 25 kilometers from the Nepal boarder Rashuwagadhi between China and Nepal at Gyirong Port / Rasuwa Gadhi, and only around 174 kilometers by road to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Situated on the east bank of the Gyirong Zangbo River, one of the tributaries of the Trishuli River that runs along the international border, Gyirong town lies at an altitude of around 2,700 meters above sea level. Saga county is with a total size of 25,500 square kilometers and a population of 13,000. Its Terrain is typical “West Plateau Mountainous Terrain”; high in north, and lower in east; With average altitude of 4,600 meters above sea level.

Saga
Saga county means “the Lovely Place” OR “Happy Land” in Tibetan. Saga County is the center county of three counties of Western Shigatse. The other two are Zhongba County, and Gyirong county. It is Located in northern foothills of Himalayas, Southwest edge of south Kailash Mountains, belonging to upstream area of Brahmaputra River; It has grown rapidly in the recent years due to well developed tourism. It is approximately 470 kilometers east of Mt. Kailash. Almost a must stop for overnight when travel to Ngari Prefecture.

Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar – Mount Kailash: The Center of the Universe by Four Religions

Mount Kailash is 6,714m high and with its four sheer walls and snow capped peak it is an awe-inspiring sight. For Hindus it is the holiest of the holy place as the abode of Lord Shiva. It also has geographical significance as four great rivers flow from it: the Karnali, the Indus, the Sutlej and the Brahmaputra, which drain the vast Tibetan Plateau to contribute to the Ganges in India. Kailash is an object of devout pilgrimage also for the Buddhists.

Lake Manasarovar is situated approximately 30km from Mt. Kailash and is one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world. This beautiful and sacred lake is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists and Hindus, as it is believed that bathing in the holy waters will cleanse one’s sins. With views to Gurla Mandhata (7,728m)on the backdrop , this is a place of serene beauty. On the northwest shore of the lake is the picturesque Chiu Monastery.

Visiting Mount Kailash can be a physically demanding journey, so it’s important to pay special attention to health and safety. Consult a doctor before you go, and discuss altitude sickness medication. Carry a basic first aid kit and any necessary medications with you on your tour.

Day 01 Kathmandu - Syabrubesi (Rasuwaghadhi)/6 hour drive/145km-Gyirong 25km
Drive to Rasuwagadhi boarder in the early morning. The settlement of Syabrubesi is located in Langtang, in Kathmandu’s northern area. We arrive in Syabrubesi after a 6–7-hour drive through the Pasang Lhamu Highway. Cross the border completing Nepal side immigration. After custom and China side immigration drive to Gyirong city also known as Kerung/ Jilong), the first small city in Tibet. Overnight in Hotel.

Day 02 Gyirong to Saga 170km/5 hr
After breakfast drive to Saga by ascending and descending the passes of Thong La and La Lung. We will be able to witness Lake Peiku Tso and the Tibetans’ customary method of yak and sheep grazing along the way. Overnight in Hotel.

Day 04 Acclimatization at Saga

Day 05 Saga to Mansarovar via Paryang 277km/6 hr
After breakfast at Saga, we will drive to the highest fresh water lake in the world, the holy Mansarovar Lake, lying at an altitude of 4558 meters, stretching wide with a pristine greenish-blue color. The holy lake is believed to be the resting place of Lord Bishnu. It is surrounded by Mt. Kailash, Mt. Gurula-Mandata, and the Lake Rakshasha (Rakshash Taal). The Rakshash Taal is believed to be created by the Evil King Ravan, and the locals believe the water is poisonous. Overnight at guest house around Lake Mansarovar.

Day 06 Mansarovar Exploration – drive to Darchen [110+40]km / 3 hr
We will get into our spiritual selves, and perform some rituals (puja) at the bank of the holy lake Mansarovar. Our staffs will provide a bucket of hot holy water for each yatri from the lake Mansarovar for bathing. After our puja and prayers, we will complete the Parikrama of the Mansarovar Lake on a Jeep which is approx 110km/2 hour, and continue to the base camp of Kailash, Darchen 40km/1 hour. It is a village town right in front of the sacred Mt. Kailash. Overnight in hotel.

Day 07 Darchen - Yamadwar - Drirapuk (Kailash Parikrama Starts)
We will embark on a three – day parikrama. We first drive to the small settlement of Tarboche, also called as Darboche 13km/30mnt drive. It is the starting point of the Kailash Kora, and is also known as the Valley of Gods. Yamadwar, the gatewat of the God of Death, is located here in Tarboche. We will walk approx 5 hours to arrive at the settlement of Derapuk, settling right in front of the North Face of Mt. Kailash. Overnight and rest at a guest house.

Day 08Dirapuk to Juthulpuk (Drolma La Pass) /5650m/19km/8 hr
Among the three days of Kora, today is the longest and the most difficult day. We will be heading towards the village of Jarok Donkhang first, and hike towards the Shiva-stal. We will rest for some time, and take a steep downhill and get to the banks of Lham-chu Khir river. We catch sight of the Holy Pond of ‘Gaurikunda’. We reach the village of Juthulpuk, this place is named after. The famous cave of Juthulpuk, Zruthulpuk cave, also known as ‘the miracle cave’. We will also catch sight of the Buddha’s Footprints along the way. Overnight at a guest house.

Day 09Zuthulpuk to Saga (Kailash Parikrama Ends)/290km/8 hr
We will spend the morning touring the nearby Milarepa cave’s caves and temples. After breakfast, we will climb for three to four hours to finish our Kora and return to the Darchen settlement. We’ll eat there lunch before heading back to Saga. Overnight in Hotel.

Day 10Saga to Gyirong 170km/5 hr
We will take a nice ride on paved Tibetan roads back to the settlement of Gyirong, which is near the border between Nepal and Tibet. Today is our day off, so we may relax and spend the night at a hotel in Gyirong.

Trip Notes

You need to arrive Kathmandu at least 4-5 working day before for China visa. China embassy working days are Mon/Tue/Wed/Thu/Fri except Chinese Govt. holiday. During these free day, you can buy tours from us or can stay on your own. China visa taken in your home country is not enough to travel Tibet from Nepal. We have to apply for Tibet group tourist visa here in Kathmandu.
Visa fee, entrance fee, hotel rate subject to increase without prior information.
We need your passport copy by email 35 days before the travel date to make travel permit(Invitation letter).
