Already in western Nepal, or arriving from India through the Rupaidiha–Nepalgunj border? The 3 Days Rara Tour from Nepalgunj by Air (2 nights / 3 days) is the shortest and most convenient way to reach Rara Lake (2,990 m), the “Queen of Lakes” in the remote Mugu district of Karnali. A 45-minute mountain flight from Nepalgunj to the airstrip of Talcha, followed by a short jeep ride, puts you beside the lake the same morning, and you spend two peaceful nights on full board inside Rara National Park.
At 10.8 sq km and up to 167 m deep, Rara is Nepal’s largest and deepest lake. Its clear water reflects the surrounding ridges, forested with blue pine, black juniper, spruce and rhododendron, and changes colour from turquoise to deep blue through the day. The 106 sq km park – Nepal’s smallest – shelters red pandas, Himalayan black bears, musk deer and more than 500 species of flowering plants, while migratory ducks and grebes visit the lake in winter.
Your full day at Rara can include a 20-minute boat ride on the lake, gentle walks along the shoreline trail and a hike (or horse ride) to Murma Top at about 3,700 m for the classic view over the whole lake and the snow peaks of the Kanjirowa and Saipal ranges. With no traffic and few visitors, it is one of the most tranquil places in the Himalaya.
