From the crowded, glacier-fed trail to Everest to a three-week circuit around the world’s third-highest peak that barely sees a hundred trekkers a year, Nepal’s trekking routes are as varied as the mountains themselves

KATHMANDU: Nepal has built its global reputation on eight of the world’s fourteen peaks above 8,000 metres. But its trekking economy runs on routes that never require touching a summit at all. Roughly a dozen trails account for the great majority of the country’s trekking traffic. At the top of that list sit ten treks that between them cover almost every kind of Himalayan landscape on offer: glacial cirques, rhododendron forest, wind-scoured desert and villages that still function largely as they did a century ago.

What follows is a route-by-route look at the ten. They are not ranked by any official measure, but by the rough order in which trekking operators and guidebooks typically place them.

Everest Base Camp: the trek everyone has heard of

The Everest Base Camp trek sits in the Khumbu region and typically takes 12 to 14 days. That depends on acclimatisation days and whether trekkers fly in and out of Lukla or add extra side trips. The trail’s highest point is not the base camp itself but Kala Patthar, a rocky outcrop above the village of Gorak Shep that most sources place at roughly 5,545 metres. Everest’s summit is actually visible from there.
