Sauraha marks International Elephant Day with special feast for 60 elephants (photo feature)     12 Aug 2026

CHITWAN: A total of 60 elephants, including government and privately owned elephants, were treated to a special picnic in Sauraha on Wednesday to mark the 15th International Elephant Day.

The elephants were provided with foods and fruits including jaggery rice pudding, bread, sugarcane, carrots, dragon fruit, bananas, pumpkins, and watermelons. The event offered a break for elephants normally engaged in patrols and jungle safari activities.

Speaking at the event, Chitwan National Park Warden Dil Bahadur Purja Pun said the park has been working to promote elephant welfare.

Dipendra Khatiwada, president of the United Elephant Cooperative, said elephants are integral to the tourism sector and that tourism entrepreneurs have been contributing to their protection.

The picnic was organized by the cooperative in coordination with various community forests. This year’s World Elephant Day theme is “Safe and Environment-Friendly Corridors, Safe Elephants.”

An estimated 250 to 400 wild elephants are found in Nepal, while around 200 domesticated elephants are used for various purposes.
